FAQ/Concerns and the ANSWERS
Q: Doesn’t it cost a lot of money?
A: Fraternities are a
business after all. The best thing about paying dues in a fraternity
is that every dime you pay goes towards something you do. Socials,
fun recruitment events, formal dances, activities with sororities,
and of course we have to pay fraternity dues as an organization to
the university and to our International Headquarters.
It’s not “buying your friends
”--as some people (Non-Greeks) call it--it is paying for a
lifetime of brotherhood
and friendships
with brothers around the world. Networking goes along with Theta
Chi, the money you pay in college for dues won’t compare to the
dividends it could pay being a Theta Chi when looking for a job; there
are many well-established brothers
in the business world that would love to employ brothers from the
prestigious Theta Chi Iota Beta chapter.
Q: I am too busy; I don’t think I will have time.
A: There is always time for something
that will change your life forever.
Most, if not all of our brothers will tell you that joining
Theta Chi was the best decision they have
made in their entire college career or even their life. Theta Chi
takes up very little mandatory time, Theta
Chi takes up time in our lives because
we want it to. We have the President
of the student body, President of IFC, President of SAC, and Presidents
of many other smaller organizations on campus and still find time to
contribute to the fraternity. We say this all the time, “Theta Chi will
give you 10 times of what you put into it.”
Q: Will my grades fall after joining?
A: Our fraternity achieved a
3.26 GPA in the Fall 2007 semester,
an all-time high among Fraternities and Sororities. The
all campus GPA for the spring was
3.03 and the
all campus men’s GPA was a
2.90. The
all fraternity GPA was a
2.86. Being in Theta Chi, if anything,
improves your grades. Once you’re a brother, you will want to participate
in as many events you can, but if you have less than a
2.65, you are already on
probation. We have very high standards,
but all it does is help us become better gentlemen.
Q: Aren’t fraternities all about drinking, partying, and popularity?
A: Sure, fraternities have parties,
but fraternity life isn’t Animal House. We do have socials with
sororities quite often, and when it comes down to it: we
are a
SOCIAL fraternity. Our national
fraternity has a dry house policy, so there is no alcohol or substances,
even tobacco, allowed on our property. We are about being
gentleman and we have a good reputation
for that and we don’t need to drink
or try to get popular by getting drunk all the time. Also, we pride ourselves
on our community involvement. We amassed approximately
1800 community service hours as an
organization, helping out at Big Brothers and Big Sisters, The Humane Society,
Convoy of Hope, and the Ronald McDonald House to name a few. Each of our
members are required to give 10 hours of their time per semester to community
service hours, which is a small task that means so much for the community.
Q: What makes Theta Chi different from other fraternities?
A: We strive for excellence in everything
we do. We are as culturally diverse as fraternities come and most likely the
most culturally diverse fraternity on campus.
Most of our brothers are the men that never thought they would go Greek.
We also strive to win and compete in everything we do. We don’t
have to tell you about our countless awards
we have won, but those are just a representation of us
working together as
one unit, and only trying to win because it is
fun being around our brothers on the road to winning. You’ll hear
every fraternity say they are the best, but we truly think we are the best overall
fraternity on this campus and one of the top
chapters in Theta Chi nationally and we can prove it with
credentials,
trophies, and most importantly
brotherhood.
Q: Don’t you guys haze?
A: We believe that
our brotherhood is built on respect
, not humiliation. Once you are a brother of Theta Chi you mean just as
much as someone who has been in for four years. We don’t need to haze
our new members to earn respect; respect
earns respect.
Q: What do I do to learn more about or possibly join Theta Chi?
A: Our recruitment chair’s
phone number and e-mail address are available at the top of this page,
so feel free to contact him whenever you would like to. When you are in
Springfield, feel free to stop by the house anytime (1043 E. Cherry St.
--located behind Hutchens House). Find out when recruitment events are and
come out to them and meet the guys, making the first step of showing any
interest at all is the hardest part. Take advantage of the fun times during
recruitment because even if you decide not to join, you might as well have
fun your first weeks of the semester feeling out Greek life. |
